Madrassa of Istanbul
Madrassa of Istanbul – Tom Cubereo
Created in the aftermath of the contentious 2016 US Presidential election, Cubereo creates an image of reconciliation using the motifs and imagery of Persian and Ottoman miniature painting. In the center, Mohammad and Moses speak openly as Suni and Shia (represented by their differing headdresses) look on to the left and right respectively. Though separated in the background, in the foreground, Suni and Shia come together in conversation. These green shoots of commonality mark a stark difference to the political environment in which the main power brokers in the Middle East (Saudi-Suni, and Iran-Shia) are fighting proxy wars in Yemen.
